KEY PEOPLE
• CHARLES DE GAULLE He was a French leader and led the Free French during World War II. He refused to accept France and Germany’s truce after they invaded in 1940, and he fled to England starting the “French government in exile” in London.
• WINSTON CHURCHILL From May 1940-1945, Winston Churchill served as Prime Minister and Minster of Defense in England. He refused to back down against the Nazi, inspiring the people of England and America. He had a strong relationship with the U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt but was also able to keep some alliance with the Soviet Union.
• DOUGLAS MACARTHUR was one of the most important and heroic generals of WWII
• HIROHITO Hirohito, known as Emperor Shōwa in Japan, was the 124th Emperor of Japan ruling from December 25, 1926, until his death in 1989. During World War II Japan, allied with the Germans attacking many of it’s neighboring countries and the United States at Pearl Harbor.
• ERWIN ROMMELA German Field Marshall during WWII who was known as “desert Fox”. He was one of Germany;s most respected military leaders. He was extremely kind and rational, for example when Italians took valuables from British POW’s during the war he ordered them to be given back. He was not a cruel man.
• DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER was the 34th President of the United States and a 5 star general. He is well known for his famous campaign slogan “I Like Ike”.
• FDR was the 32nd president of the United States from 1933- 1945. He served the longest term of any President and helped expand and improve the duties of the presidency to better provide for the people.
• JOSEPH STALIN was the dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929-1953. He turned the Soviet Union into an militaristic and industrialized nation to compete with the greater industrial powers of Europe. He invoked fear upon the Soviet Union, costing many people their lives.
• BENITO MUSSOLINI was a Facist Italian dictator and one of Hitler’s closest allies during the War. He was killed after Germany surrendered in 1945.
• ADOLF HITLER was the dictator of Germany from 1933-1945 although he was Austrian, and the leader of the Nazi Party. He believed in the superiority of the Aryan race, the extermination of Jews and other minorities and wanted to create a German Empire that spanned across all of Europe.
• CHIANG KAI-SHEK was the Leader of China during the war and was a member of the Chinese Nationalist Party. He aided the allies during the war and also succeeded in unifying China.
• HARRY TRUMAN was he Vice President to FDR and became President after his death and the end of the war.
